hello! I read your comment on the board so i decided to come in and tell you my secret hehe. I basically do the line art on one of the top layers. Then on the very bottom layer I choose a color, usually dark and rich or maybe a little muted depending on the mood of the piece, and completely cover the canvas. Then I'll choose, lets say a skin color, and I'll only hit the character with that color on the areas the light hits on the same bottom layer. Once I have that laid out I go in and "right click" on the edges of the color I just set down to get the mixed color of the skin and back ground color. I continue this shading methodically, almost. I do the same things with the clothes, sometimes adjusting the colors if they dont look well with the background laid out.

I use this technique cause it guarantees that your whole pallete works together because they all have that base color. Also, don't be afraid to use complimentary colors, they look awesome. :3
